A NEW BRIDGE
AIAS Freedom by DesignProject Overview:Located at the Buford Middle School in Charlottesville, VA is an existing nature trail used by students as well as teachers to arrive and depart from school. The existing trail utilized a small bridge that had decayed over time and was becoming difficult and unsafe to cross. After meetings and discussion with the Buford Middle School staff, we designed a foot-bridge that spans the entire creeks valley, thus solving the problem. When construction was nearly completed, we arranged a day for the children at the school to come out and draw their names and hand prints into concrete stepping blocks, which, would later be placed in the creek for all to see. Because of our efforts, there is also now an outdoor classroom area for teachers and students to sit at creeks edge for ecosystem educational discussions.
