Designing an Urban District

Picture

Raising the Bar

| VORTEX | Architecture Competition

Result: Honorably Mentioned

Site: Charlottesville, VA
2015

DESCRIPTION
The School of Architecture annually holds a design charrette for both the undergraduate and graduate students after each winter recess, called VORTEX and published annually. The 2015 prompt was titled “COMMON SPACES FOR AN UNCOMMON ACADEMICAL VILLAGE” and teams proposed a design that became a gateway to the University itself. Located across from a prominent highway, my team’s bar concept proposes a new urban district that would facilitate housing and commercial development while channeling traffic into the UVA community. Stitching the surrounding rural environment with the urban flow of traffic in our scheme allowed for a harmonious connection. My team was HONORABLY MENTIONED out of over 20 entries.

Team: Brandon Eck, Taylor Hewett, Mohamed Ismail, Oliver Atwood, Xiaoyu Yang
